Naming Rights Sponsor Announced For Wheelchair Rugby National Championship

Wheelchair Rugby Australia (WRA) has today announced the retention of leading insurance brand GIO as the Naming Rights sponsor for the 2021 GIO Wheelchair Rugby National Championship on the Gold Coast this April.

GIO have a long-standing history with wheelchair rugby, having supported the National Championship as the Naming Rights sponsor for the past 7 years. Negotiations with GIO had been ongoing, and the confirmation of a new deal provides some much-needed stability to wheelchair rugby domestically as the sport looks to push forward following the impact of COVID-19 last season.

Wheelchair Rugby Australia’s General Manager, Chris Nay said “The value of this sponsorship from GIO cannot be understated. Their continued support of this event over the years has changed the wheelchair rugby landscape across Australia for the better, and to have them support us in such uncertain times is a true testament to their unwavering commitment to our great game. The entire wheelchair rugby community is grateful for their support.”

Commenting on the sponsorship, GIO’s Executive Manager CTP (NSW & SA) Surayez Rahman said “GIO has been a proud supporter of wheelchair rugby in Australia for many years and is excited to see the National Championship back for 2021. We have every confidence Wheelchair Rugby Australia will grow the event and indeed, the sport, through the move to the Gold Coast. We’re delighted that through our sponsorship, we can help showcase the incredibly talented athletes taking part in the event.”

Despite not running any domestic competition in 2020, this year’s National Championship is set to become the largest on record with the inclusion of two competition divisions coupled with the announcement of the Gold Coast as the host city of the championship adding to the anticipation.

The event will be broadcast online with commentary and will showcase the best wheelchair rugby athletes across Australia as they represent their respective state teams in what will be their final sanctioned competition hit-out ahead of the Tokyo games.
