Major Events Gold Coast sign two-year agreement to bring the 2022 and 2023 Wheelchair Rugby National Championship to the Gold Coast

Wheelchair Rugby Australia (WRA) is today pleased to announce an extended partnership with Major Events Gold Coast  (MEGC) to keep the 2022 and 2023 Wheelchair Rugby National Championship on the Gold Coast.

The 2021 Wheelchair Rugby National Championship was the first time the event had been held on the Gold Coast and marked a huge step up in domestic competition with a ground-breaking broadcast deal and state-of-the-art facility.

Wheelchair Rugby are proud to continue this legacy in 2022 and 2023 with the unwavering commitment and support from Major Events Gold Coast.

“I’m delighted we have secured the wheelchair rugby national championships for a further two years,’’ Mayor Tom Tate said. “I know from my injuries that rugby in its traditional form is tough ... wheelchair rugby is next level.

“With the sport now on a global scale, Australia is home to some of the best athletes on the planet so get down and cheer them on in June.’’

MEGC CEO Jan McCormick said “We’re thrilled to be able to support the Wheelchair Rugby Australia National Championships again”.

“These remarkable athletes have a huge national following with last year’s event securing the largest broadcast deal in Australian history for a disability team sport, this is fantastic for the sport and for the Gold Coast as the Championship’s host destination.”

Commenting on the partnership, Wheelchair Rugby Australia’s General Manager, Chris Nay, said “This is a landmark announcement for our sport. The stability of a two-year home for the sport’s showpiece in Australia is a great step forward. MEGC have been unwavering in the support of the event, as have the people of the Gold Coast and we are looking forward to improving our partnership and event across the next two years in our new home”.

The Wheelchair Rugby National Championship will be held on the Gold Coast in 2022 and 2023. The 2022 Wheelchair Rugby National Championship will take place over three days commencing on Friday, 24 June 2022, with the Bronze and Gold Medal matches to take place on Sunday, 26 June 2022.

The event will be held at the Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre which is one of the city’s premier sporting venues boasting a state-of-the-art design and breathtaking architecture. It also hosted many elite sporting events during the 2018 Commonwealth Games so is the perfect venue to showcase our athletes competing in the Wheelchair Rugby National Championship.
